Kansas City has a new grass-fed/grass finished beef ranch. A seventh-generation rancher moved his Black Angus cattle from Warsaw, Missouri to Lawson, Missouri (just North of Kansas City). This new ranch sells its Grass-Fed Beef through its website. What is Grass-Fed/Grass Finished Beef? Grass-fed beef is a term that is used but unfortunately misused a lot. Grass-fed doesn’t mean that the cow has only ate grass its entire life. Unfortunately, grass-fed can be used as a term to describe cows that started out eating grass. You have to add the term Grass Finished to Grass-fed to ensure that the cow has never had anything to eat except grass its entire life. KC Grass Fed Beef company only sells cows that have only had grass to eat their entire life. They don’t give their cattle added hormones or antibiotics either. Why Does Grass-Fed/Grass Finished Beef Cost More? Obviously, you need land to grow cows. Most ranchers that raise cattle that go to feedlots and then on to the grocery stores want to make the most they can out of every acre they have. They give their cattle corn and other feed to get them to grow as quickly as possible so they can turn their new calves every year. Cows the eat grass as they born to do, they don’t gain weight as quickly. They grow their natural way and if a rancher stays with that natural way of raising cattle it takes 2 years to raise a calf large enough to take to the processor. That means the grass-fed/grass finished rancher can only sell half the cows per ranch per year that a rancher that feeds grain can. Land is the most expensive part of ranching. If it takes two times longer, no wonder grass-fed/grass finished beef is a lot more expensive. What Are the Health Benefits of Grass-Fed/Grass Finished Beef? Most of the bad health risks that come from eating beef is not due to the cow. It’s due to what the cow is fed. Cows were never meant to eat grain. Their stomachs were not made to digest grain. The high amount of grain that that cows are fed to make them larger changes everything in the meat and the fat within the cow. When cows eat what their bodies were meant to eat, they become a wonderful source of healthy protein.
